Valais has been producing a large variety of wines for a long time, white as well as red. It has reached such a point that numerous specialists consider it as a kind of wine conservatory. This diversity is explained by the climate, which is continental and warm, but without being excessive. There is also the quality of the soils a large number of which are alluvial, with a dominant calcareous content. Certain plants are indigenous, as they are found only in Valais. This is notably the case with the two types of vine which provide the sumptuous wines: arvine, a powerful white, and cornalin, an elegant, beautifully complex red. Other vine types have been imported from the Rhone valley, such as ermitage (marsanne) or syrah. A few vines from outside the region have acquired original characters in Valais. One fine example is chasselas, which produces a fresh, fruity, slightly effervescent wine: fendant. Then there is sylvaner, which gives a creamy and full-bodied vintage: johannisberg. The Rouvinez company offers all of the top wines produced in Valais. From surpluses, it has produced original blends of white wines (Trémaille, Noble Contrée, Grains Nobles) as well as reds (Tourmentin, Château Lichten). |
